Handrails Made to Measure

At Soward Steel & Aluminium Fabrication, we create custom metal handrails in the Northern Rivers that perfectly fit your space, with no gaps, no wobbles, and no compromises. Whether it’s for stairs, access ramps, balconies, or industrial walkways, we fabricate every component for strength, safety, and style using stainless steel, aluminium, or mild steel, depending on the application.

Each job is measured, cut and welded in our South Lismore workshop to meet Australian safety codes and your design brief. We work with clients across Lismore, Ballina, Casino, Kyogle and Byron Bay. Call (02) 6621 4800 to obtain a quote or discuss your specifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about custom fabrication or compliance requirements? Here are the answers to some of the most common things people ask.

FAQ Icon
  • What are the legal requirements for handrail height and spacing?

In Australia, handrails must comply with the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and Australian Standards such as AS 1428.1 (for access and mobility) and AS/NZS 1170 (for structural design actions). Generally, handrails should be between 865mm and 1000mm in height for stairs and landings. The clearance between the handrail and adjacent wall should be at least 50mm. Spacing and strength requirements vary based on application (residential, commercial, or industrial) and may also depend on whether the handrail is part of a balustrade or a stand-alone support.

  • What materials are best for outdoor handrails?

For outdoor use, the best handrail materials are aluminium, stainless steel (typically marine grade 316), or galvanised mild steel. These metals offer excellent durability and corrosion resistance, especially in harsh environments like coastal areas. Aluminium is lightweight and naturally rust-resistant, stainless steel offers a sleek finish with high strength, and galvanised steel provides robust support with added protection through its zinc coating. The final choice depends on exposure levels, aesthetic preference, and the expected level of wear.

  • Can handrails be custom-made to match existing architecture?

Yes. Custom-fabricated handrails can be designed to complement existing architectural features, whether modern, industrial, heritage or minimalist. A fabricator can tailor the design, material, finish and mounting style to match the space, using curved profiles, mixed materials (like timber and glass), decorative infill panels or colour-matched coatings. This is especially valuable for renovations or extensions where the new handrails need to blend seamlessly with the original structure while still meeting safety and compliance requirements.

Practical & Compliant

We fabricate handrails that aren’t just compliant. They’re made to suit the job and built to last. Choose from aluminium, stainless or mild steel, with options for powder coating, anodising or galvanising to match the environment and finish. We can integrate timber, glass or decorative panels for a custom look, and every rail is designed to fit your layout, including straight runs, ramps, balconies or curved staircases.
